Our guiding ethos
We’re not just a regular garden. Every decision and action in this space is made with a conscious effort to try and do better for ourselves, our community and our environment. At our garden we focus on returning the land (Kaurna country) to a community space, sharing our learning, sharing our food, inspiring others in the community to garden and prepare to leave this garden in the best possible state for future communities. When we act, we do so with purpose, and guided by these principles:
1. SUSTAINABILITY. Our actions and decisions will meet the needs of the present garden and surrounding community without trading the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
2. DIVERSITY. We value diversity both in our garden and in our community and use it for balance, increased understanding, creative possibility, self-resilience and community resilience.
3. COMMUNITY AND INCLUSION. Integrate rather than segregate: we will recognise the benefits of cooperative relationships with each other and the garden, create community connections, and understand the needs of community beyond the individual.
4. COMPASSION. We will be open to personal reflection, will accept feedback, and be open to changing counter-productive behaviour. We will be patient with each other and the garden.
5. PERMACULTURE. We will use the garden to expand on the traditional permaculture measures of success and productivity. We are guided by the general principles of permaculture: earth care, people care and fair share.
6. LOCAL. We will use small and slow solutions, local resources and responses in the garden.
